The woman and the wine are so interconnected among themselves in Georgia as nowhere in other country in the world. This is symbolic and most important the fact that St. Nino from Cappadocia entered into Georgia with the cross in her hands, made from a grapevine. This cross was called as a “live Cross” by Georgian people. Since the cross from the grapevine is very important symbol for the Georgian Orthodox Church. The rod is the symbol of life for Georgian people.
According to archaeological and ethnographic data, cultural development of grapes and winemaking in Georgia belongs to an era of an Eneolit (the end of IV — the beginning of the III millennium BC). Seeds of cultural grapes, special knives for cutting, ornaments with image of a grapevine and other objects, founded in ancient burials are proving this fact. An archeological excavations of ancient settlements age of which counts 8 thousand years according to archeological researchs, are speaking about deep roots of winemaking in Georgia. The image of a grapevine permanently is shown at the vessels founded within archeological diggings. Wine in Georgia was used not only for religious rituals and with cheerful meals, but also for the medical purposes as medical drink. Wine was always considered In Georgia as the same valuable foodstuff with the bread and inseparable from each other.
Wine was always used for physical workers. People with weaknesses and anemia has been used old wine for appetite. Grapes were used in cookery in Georgia from ancient period. Georgians were making “Tatara” for “Churchkhelas” from grape’s juice. Churchkhela played a significant role for Georgian people. It was the necessary and nutritious product for soldiers, hunters, shepherds who were far from their houses.
At the beginning of the 19th century the Georgian women took active part in the sphere of production of alcoholic products. The fact that in 1826 Georgian woman Barbare Imerlishvili has founded vodka distillery in Tbilisi, which turned into successful business, proves aforesaid.
Today the Georgian woman is approving her role in the sphere of winemaking and is showing to society that the background of the of Pirosmani’s picture “Rtveli” doesn’t display the Georgian reality.
